Saybrook Charitable Trust (formerly
Chesterfield Charitable Fund) is a private
foundation dedicated to assisting high school seniors and
college undergraduate students in furthering their education to
accredited colleges and universities through the award of annual
scholarships. Recipients must be either permanent residents of,
or attending school in, Hartford County, Middlesex County,
Connecticut, Windham County, Vermont, or Cheshire County, New
Hampshire.
Criteria for Selection
- The candidate must exhibit strong moral and ethical
character.
- The candidate must exhibit a financial need.
- The candidate must exhibit strong academic achievement.
- The candidate must exhibit service to school and
community.
- The candidate must exhibit evidence of part time work
and/or extra curricular activities/sports.
- The candidate must intend to pursue, or be pursuing
undergraduate study towards a bachelor's degree in any of
the following areas:
- Engineering
- Technology
- Sciences
- Education
Application Procedures

Complete the application.
- Include the following with the application: (The
following is required for new applications only. Persons
using the re-application form have a different set of
requirements. Kindly refer to the re-application for
specifics.)
- A signed copy of the candidate's AND candidate's
parent/guardian most recent Internal Revenue Service Form
1040 including all schedules.
- Copy of the FAFSA SAR print summary showing student's
application along with the estimated family contribution
(EFC).
- Official school/college transcripts.
- Two letters of recommendation from faculty members,
guidance counselors, principals, or college professors.
- A 200-300-word essay outlining the candidate's goals and
any pertinent information that would assist the trustees in
making a decision.
- Applications must be postmarked no later
than March 31.
Scholarship Board
Members of Saybrook Charitable Trust will vote on all
applicants. The trustees may consult with school officials in
the course of determining the eligibility of each candidate.

Notification & Amount of Award
The trustees, based on the applicant’s
anticipated tuition costs, will determine the scholarship award.
Funds will not be awarded for room and board costs. Candidates
will be sent notification in writing no later than May 15.
Scholarship payment will be made directly to the recipient's
college or university, upon receipt by Saybrook Charitable Trust
of the first semester invoice.
Dates to Remember
- March 31: Deadline to have completed
applications postmarked.
- May 15: Notification of award.
- August 31: Deadline to submit college
invoice.
